How the Work of Christ Sustains the Work of Motherhood

DAY 2 OF 5

As moms, we love our children and wouldn’t trade motherhood for anything; yet, as we’ve talked about before, there’s often a disconnect between what our hands are busy doing and what our hearts feel.

What we see in Jesus, though, is a humble heart that fuels everything he does, a servant’s heart, and it is one we long to have ourselves. Jesus’s humility perfectly spurred on the work of his hands in creation. He has served us into existence from the infinite fullness that flows from perfect Trinitarian love.

He made us, and he cares for us.

Consider the following question:When is it hardest to serve your kids? Typically, it’s not when they are behaving well—it’s easy to love them then—and usually not when the day is going according to plan.

On the contrary, it’s hardest to serve our children when no one, or nothing, seems to be serving us in return, when our rights or authority (or even our very presence in the room!) seem disregarded, or when we are not getting what we want or think we deserve.

But consider: If anyone has a good reason for thinking it hard to serve, it is Jesus. Yet this is precisely what he came to do in his incarnation.

The Word becoming flesh defies our expectations in two major ways: Jesus willingly came into our dark world and became a human being, leaving behind his deserved high position in heaven and his perfect, loving relationship with Father and Spirit. The only person who truly deserves to be served came instead to serve us.

About this Plan

How the Work of Christ Sustains the Work of Motherhood

Do you ever feel a disconnect as a mother—like you’re doing all the “mom things” you’re supposed to do as you stoop to serve your kids with your hands, but your heart isn’t in it? Kristen Wetherell has been there too. This 5-day plan is an invitation to take in all that Christ is for you. And you’ll find that his heart and posture is changing yours.
