Day Four
The Mountain of Worry
Scripture: Psalm 119:165; Proverbs 28:1; Matthew 6:25-34; Philippians 4:6-9
Most of us know that worrying doesn’t change anything, yet we do it all the time. Three times in His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told His audience, “Do not worry” (Matthew 6:25, 31, 34).
The apostle Paul picked up this theme when he encouraged believers, “Be anxious for nothing” (Philippians 4:6).
In fact, the three greatest antidotes to anxiety are found in Philippians 4:6–9.
First, if we want to get rid of anxiety, we must pray persistently, as we read in verses 6-7, “...and the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your heart and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Second, to drive anxiety from our lives, we must think truthfully—that’s Paul’s point in verse 8: “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
If you want to experience the peace of God, think on the things of God. The best way to do that is to spend time in the Word of God. When you do, you just might run across this promise: “Those who love Your Law have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psalm 119:165).
Third, to remove the poison of anxiety, we must conduct ourselves consistently—that’s what Paul is getting at in Philippians 4:9: “The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” When our conduct isn’t consistent with what we know to be true, the result is fear. Proverbs 28:1 says, “The wicked flee when no one is pursuing.” Are you running scared from something? Is there anything you need to stop doing—or start doing?
God may or may not deliver you out of your circumstances, but He promises to give you a supernatural peace of mind in the midst of those circumstances. That’s why we must turn to God whenever we encounter the mountain of anxiety. He’s the only one who can give us the peace we long for.
In what ways can you incorporate the three greatest antidotes to anxiety in your thoughts and actions this week?
