DAY 7 OF 7

The world will not make you happy

In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge. (Proverbs 14: 26)

When the famous golfer Babe Didrikson Zaharias was dying of cancer, her husband, George Zaharias, came to her bedside. Even though the husband wanted to appear strong for his wife, he couldn't control his emotions and started crying. Babe said to her husband gently, “Honey, when I was in the hospital, I learned something. A moment of happiness is the time of a lifetime, and I have had a lot of happiness.”

Happiness flows from within. Happiness is found in the moments of life that we mark as 'quality' instead of 'quantity. Happiness arises in life's greatest tragedy when we choose to smile at what we know is good and lasting rather than cry over what we know will only hurt us temporarily. George Bernard Shaw once said, "This is true happiness in life: to be used for a purpose which you realize is a great thing…to become a force of nature rather than become a lump of selfish sickness and sorrow, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy."

The only person who can make you happy is yourself. You have to decide to be happy.

Reflection: The greatest determinant of happiness in life is when we can enjoy every breath and believe that God's providence is always our part. That's why, if we know that we can do all of these things every day, then every day is a day of happiness.

My happiness today is not determined by what happens but by my relationship with God that is eternal and unshakable.
