DAY 4 OF 5

Danger Lies Ahead

"You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is." Galatians 5:7-10

Paul begins Galatians 5:7 similar to how Galatians 5:1 began. Before, Paul told us to stand fast. We are being informed that we ran well, which naturally infers that we must continue to run. He mentions this because false prophets have been speaking to the Galatians.

We can tell that false teaching has been infiltrated by his statement, "Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you." Thus, there is a false teaching that the church is believing. This is, of course, dangerous. Why? "A little leaven leaves the whole lump."
 (v. 9)

Sometimes, false theologies and heresies aren't obvious. Sometimes they are pronounced. Regardless of their degree of blasphemy, they are indeed wrong, and we must be wary of these ideas. For the Galatians, this false teaching was legalism. Today, we can find a myriad of false teachings all over the world. It would take far too long to list them all, but we should be aware of them.

We must have discernment and wisdom regarding our intake of pastors, books, blogs, and more. This is important because, again, "a little leaven leavens the whole lump." Heresy will soon destroy the whole lump, or in this case, your salvation.

Your theology will affect how you live. It will affect how you trust in Christ. This is why we must know the Word of God well. You and I probably share in the same temptation of having favorite pastors, authors, and more.

These are fine at the root level, but if they detract from time in the Word of God, they are idols. Unfortunately, if you find yourself choosing to read a book or a blog over the Bible, you've found yourself in this exact situation.

UNCOMMEN Question: How can we strengthen our theology?

UNCOMMEN Challenge: Spend more time in the Word of God than anything else.
