DAY 8 OF 40

I live in a community of believers

As a believer – you become part of God’s family. And family shares life with each other. The first believers show us what this looks like.

Acts 2:44-47 NLT And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Community was a marked characteristic of the first believers.

As we see in Acts 2, for example, they met together, shared life, and worshipped together. They met together in the temple and in their homes. They ate together and there was great joy and generosity.

In a world where technology and virtual reality result in relationships being relegated to social media platforms and superficial online ones, it is becoming increasingly difficult to cultivate true in-person relationships.

In community, there can be meaningful relationships as we do life together by sharing, encouraging, and serving each other. Paul encouraged believers to share each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and our small groups should be places where we can be our true selves, a safe place of sharing victories and failures, joys and disappointments. It is also a place where I can know and be known, making accountability towards others part of the equation.

James spoke on this in James 5:16:

James 5:16 NLT Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Are you part of a small group? A community of believers where you can be yourself, and grow as a believer as you share life with other believers? A group where you can carry each other’s burdens and pray for each other. If not, consider how you can become part of a small group at your local church.

About this Plan

Follow: Life-Giving Habits

In the person of Jesus, God calls all people not to simply know about Him, but to follow Him with all that we are. Following Jesus daily is more like a habit than it is a moment. Habits are things we do often and regularly, without consciously thinking we have to do them. This 40-day plan will explore life-giving habits to establish us in the new life that Jesus gives.
