Evidence: The Christian Life
For our last devotion in this reading plan, we are going to address one of the most powerful evidences of the existence of Jesus Christ. (Read Matthew 5:13-16) It doesn’t require volumes of research or an advanced degree in apologetics. Yet it happens to be evidence that each follower of Christ should already possess. If you wonder what it is, here is the answer: It is a transformed life. (Read 2 Corinthians 3:18)
The evidence of a changed life is undeniable proof of the existence of Jesus Christ and the power of the cross. After all, Christians cannot separate belief from behavior. The transformative process begins within so that it can be witnessed without. And the product is not to be just a “better me” or a “better you”; the product is for each one of us to become more and more like Christ. (Read Romans 12:2)
In our reading passage today, we find Jesus comparing us to a light that is to be visible, bright, and active. We are not to shy away from hard things or feel inferior and ill-equipped to represent God in society. Just think of it this way: Jesus, the light of men, shines through us, which is evident by how we treat others, serve others, and communicate with others. When done in a manner pleasing to God, these things are good works for they glorify God.
Let’s return to our video clip, where Grace reluctantly takes the stand.
Since Christians cannot separate how they believe from how they behave, Grace’s faith isn’t the only thing on trial…Grace herself is on trial. And all she can do is tell the truth of how the Lord drew her to Himself and how she confessed His Name. As she testifies, her life in Christ becomes her testimony; her unwavering faith In Christ becomes the evidence. And all the jury witness it first hand. (Read Hebrews 11:1)
As we complete this reading plan, I pray that each one of us will be inspired by the character of Grace. Regardless of how the trial ends, she has walked through the fire with humility and kindness, never retaliating or twisting the truth to achieve a specific, more palatable outcome. Instead, Grace allows the circumstances to draw her closer to God, who strengthens her. And in the process of standing for Him, she glorifies Him.
I can know all the facts and evidence, but if I do not walk worthy of the Lord by walking in Christlikeness, all that information could land on closed ears. However, the opposite is also true. If I reason with others and share the many evidences of the historical accuracy of Jesus and the Gospel accounts in a manner pleasing to the Lord, my words might just persuade someone to reconsider their position…and possibly meet the Savior.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we are inspired by the account of Grace, who stood firm in her convictions even though there was an easier way. In these times, we know that it is possible we could face a similar challenge; however, we will not be afraid to speak Your Name. Also, we pray that the information we have received throughout this study will be useful in bringing a new perspective to those who do not yet know You. Let the manner in which we share with others be representative of lives transformed by faith.
In Jesus name, amen.
