Called 2 Love: A Journey Into Marriage Intimacy ಮಾದರಿ
Know Me . . . and Still Love Me
Marriage brings a depth of knowing each other that, at times, is intense and challenging.
It is important in your Called 2 Love journey to routinely experience the “Zacchaeus Principle.” In this principle, we remember the accepting love that Jesus had for a tax collector and how we are called to love the same.
Each of us, as imperfect humans, have some rough edges which can irritate our partner. These rough edges create anything but intimacy! So how do we respond? Do we react with our own imperfections, or do we relate with God’s unconditional love?
When complaints, criticism, and cajoling haven’t produced the desired changes in another person, rely on the kindness of the Lord!
We learn from the Zacchaeus story that accepting the love of Jesus was the key to their relationship and the changed behavior. Jesus looked beyond Zacchaeus’ faults and saw his needs. Zacchaeus was touched with gladness because of Jesus’ acceptance. During dinner, he was transformed by the kindness of the Lord (Luke 19:5–10). This same insight will serve every couple and every family well.
Both you and your spouse have some rough edges; you each have imperfections. As these rough edges are refined, conflicts will decrease, and intimacy will deepen. How you pursue this transforming work is critical to success. You and your partner need to change in certain ways, but who is the best change agent, you or the Holy Spirit? Allow Jesus to do the changing; you prioritize the loving. Talk about this with Jesus now.
Lord, move me from reacting, to responding with your love. Help me look beyond my partner’s imperfections and see their needs. I specifically need your help as I . . .
Pause and reflect on typical complaints and rough spots in your marriage, then consider what the kindness of the Lord might look like as it is lived out through you.
Claim the promise of Romans 15:7 as you look beyond your partner’s faults and meet his or her needs.
