Week 14
Mark 5
Doing the Impossible
In Mark 5, we find Jesus doing the impossible over and over again. He is casting out legions of demons who shudder at his presence and obey him. He heals a decade-long chronic illness simply with His touch and raises a young girl from the dead.
Jesus can do the impossible. He has the power to bend natural law and can undo what has already been done. He demonstrates the scriptural truth that all things were made through Him, for Him, and are under His authority. In every story in this chapter, people had given up hope! “No one could subdue” the demon-possessed man. The woman had “suffered a great deal under many doctors” until she spent every penny she had. They said of the young girl that she is dead so “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
Yet none of these things were too difficult for Jesus. In fact, he undoes these hopeless situations with only a word and a touch.
Jesus is alive today. He did not stay in the grave. The one who can do the impossible lives. Therefore, do not despair or be afraid in your circumstances. What situation in your life are you telling yourself, “No one can subdue this.” What thing in your life has caused you to “suffer a greater deal” than you can afford? Do you ever say to yourself, “I won’t bother God about this anymore,” because you think it can’t be undone? Take these things to Jesus—all of them. Let Jesus be the bridge that extends from impossibility to belief. It is Jesus who turns our hopelessness to hope. When we don’t have the strength to overcome, Jesus always does.
Family Connection: We can trust God to be in control because He loves us, cares for us, and hears us when we pray to Him. Have each family member think of someone they know that is sick or struggling with health issues. Send them an encouraging card! Remind them that God sees and cares for them.
