Prayer: Father, thank You for allowing us to delight in You! May we continue to be reminded that You alone are our sustenance. Show me today what it looks like to depend on You as my ultimate source of life. Help me to love You more and more. Amen.
True Satisfaction
As humans, we are limited in what we can see beyond the present moment. Many times, I let my hope rest in what I know, and I let my joy depend on my circumstances. We are quick to forget God’s goodness, and we’re heavily dependent on our emotions.
When wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites were commanded to remember God and everything He did during those 40 years. The people of God are reminded of His promise in a season where it was probably very difficult to trust. They are reminded that even in their hunger, God Himself provided for them. Even more than food, was the LORD God their sustenance! Though surrounded by scarcity and uncertainty, the Lord continued to provide for them. He was faithful to meet them there, and He Himself was abundantly more than they could have asked or imagined. He Himself was the satisfaction of their souls.
Like Israel in Deuteronomy 8, may we continue to be faithful to remember the Lord. We are so quick to forget who He is and what He has done. As we spend time fasting, may He be the meditation of our hearts and the one we desire. May we continue to trust His provision even in seasons of scarcity.
Look in the Word:
- Read Deuteronomy 8:3. This was the Scripture that Jesus quoted when He was being tempted by the devil in Matthew 4. After reading Deuteronomy 8, what significance do you find in Jesus quoting these words?
- Why is it important for us to remember the Lord when we are fasting?
What’s Next?
- Take time to remember the Lord and all He has done! Spend 15 minutes journaling testimonies of God’s faithfulness you’ve witnessed, whether in your own life or in the life of a friend/family member.
- Spend 10 minutes listing out some of your favorite characteristics of God. Write the reasons why you love these things about Him next to each one.
- Spend 10 minutes praising God for His goodness and faithfulness! Sing songs of adoration and praise, journal, play an instrument, dance, pray, draw, or whatever act of worship you find fitting.
