Haggai lives and writes at the same time as Zechariah. The people return to a destroyed city and are rebuilding it. Unfortunately, they put a higher priority on building nice homes for themselves than on rebuilding God’s temple. Haggai tells them God can’t honor the things they are doing when they refuse to give God first priority.
Placing our own comfort above our relationship with God is something that can happen at any time for anyone. Just as it was for the people of that day, we can’t ignore God and then expect him honor us. He must be the highest priority in all we do.
