And as we know, the Bible is alive. And so one of the things that we can observe is that rereading the same passages isn't a bad thing. In fact, it opens up this door to rediscovery. What scripture meant to you 10 years ago or 15 years ago or 30 years ago is different than what it may say to you today.
Recently, I was doing a devotional with my son and one of his friends a couple of weeks ago. We were going through Proverbs 16 on this day and I highlighted the verses most important to me. And my son and his friend did the same thing. This really interesting thing came out of that. The narrative of these three verses from different parts of Proverbs (Proverbs 16:2,9, and 10). We can read them in sequential, although note that there's some other scripture between each of these, but...
All persons ways seem pure to them. The motives are weighed by the Lord in their hearts. Humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. The lives of a king speak as an oracle in his mouth does not betray justice. How much better to get wisdom and goal to get insight rather than silver?
These verses together can remind us that our hearts are prone to corruption and our hearts run after things that are not always the Lord's design. That we can be tempted to take the steering wheel out of God's hands.
But there's so much joy in being able to do things in partnership and to have our hearts start to chart our course—while simultaneously having people around us that can make sure that the Lord is speaking directly into decisions that we make. Knowing that the heart is deceitful means we have to do this with others. We can't go it alone. A hedge of protection for believers comes through both fellowship as well as God's word and prayer.
Having others around you to help you see the course God has planned for you is truly one of life's greatest gifts.
