Home Discipleship Restart

DAY 4 OF 7

We are made in God’s image. This cannot be overemphasized enough. That means every beautiful feature and every perceived flaw bears the mark of God’s goodness and grace. In an age where many struggle with identity, our hearts desperately need to embody the truth that we are made in God’s image. Although we are completely loved, we must remember we are the creation of a divine creator. Only by knowing the Creator do we then know who we are.

Just as each of our children has been made in the image of God uniquely and wonderfully, we must bear in mind that each of our children has a unique path to knowing Jesus through home discipleship. While we partake in common family elements like Bible reading, prayer, and devotions, each of our children must be discipled individually. Our image bearers must know in whose image they are created and be discipled to fulfill their God-given potential.

How does individual discipleship differ from collective family discipleship? Family devotional time, church attendance, and the things of the Lord that we do as a family provide the foundational elements and baseline expectations that our children can stand firmly upon. But collective family discipleship is not enough. Our goal is for our children to have a personal and transformational relationship with Jesus. This is cultivated in INDIVIDUAL hearts.

Your child is unique and wonderful. The way God speaks to your child and draws your child to Him will be unique and wonderful. Our goal is not only to train up our children in the fear and delight of the Lord, but we must also search for and capitalize upon God ready moments. Be on the lookout for those times when we see our children searching after the Lord and wanting to know Him more. Be praying for the moments that their hearts are tender and open to the Lord. With individual discipleship, we are there to guide our children as they work out their faith and develop a relationship, not of compliance but commitment. We are there to help them discover who God made them be. We are there to release them to take bold steps of faith for the unique path God has for them.

Our children bear His image. Their identity is in Him. Only when we lead them and empower them to know Christ personally will they understand their purpose and who they truly are in Him.
