Day 1: Invite God In
As relationships mature, their impact on your life grows exponentially. The transition from casual check-ins to becoming a part of the fabric of who you are and how you operate.
Marriage is the best example of this. Eventually, your boyfriend or girlfriend becomes your spouse and, in a healthy marriage, your life forever changes. No matter where you go or what you do, you are connected to that person. Everything in your life is linked to that other person. Strong relationships shift priorities and perspectives in a meaningful way.
You might be asking, what in the world does this have to do with working out? Well, a life-altering relationship is what God invites us into through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Every part of our lives should be changed by our relationship with God. So the real question is, how can this NOT be about our workout time?
This thought runs contrary to the world's posture on fitness. We rock the Christian gear and maybe even pray beforehand, but including Christ in our workout is a foreign concept to most. However, God's word suggests something different. Galatians 5:24-25 reminds us to keep this intimate relationship with Him intact: "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." So let's keep in step and go with Him—everywhere.
Perhaps I should be more straightforward. The term "invite" may be too passive. God expects that we "keep in step with the Spirit"! When we commit our lives to Christ, his Spirit lives within us, and we no longer live according to our flesh. We are to walk WITH Him, step by step and moment by moment, through life. We shouldn't be able to distinguish our time of fitness from our time anywhere else. We need to be committed to keeping in step with the Spirit, everywhere, always.
