Hearing God Through the Year

DAY 7 OF 24

God Expressing His Mind

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” Psalm 19:1-4 (NIV)

The word of God is God speaking and communicating. When God speaks, he expresses his mind, his character and his purposes. Thus he is always present with his word.

But words of God are more than “words,” as we think of them. All expressions of God’s mind are “words” of God. Anything God does to express his mind are “words” of God. This is true whether God uses things that are outside the human’s mind (as in natural phenomena expressed in Psalm 19:1-4, other human beings, the incarnate Christ—the Logos—or the Bible) or inside the human mind (our own thoughts, intentions and feelings). God creates, rules and redeems through these words.

MEDITATION: Read Psalm 19:1-4 again. Respond to God about how these words express the mind, character and purposes of God. Are you surprised that nature is a “word” of God?

About this Plan

Hearing God Through the Year

Dallas Willard urged us to learn and practice prayer as a two-way dialogue with God. These excerpts from his best-selling book Hearing God, assembled by Jan Johnson, are an invitation to meet God, to allow his voice to shape your choices, and to encourage your heart. As you begin this four-week reading plan, thank God that he promises to meet you wherever you are in your faith journey.
