New Fruit: 7 Days of Porn Recovery for Women

DAY 4 OF 7

Do you remember the seven identity wounds (rejection, abandonment, confusion, fear, shame, hopelessness, powerlessness)? Right now, you may be asking the question: What does it actually mean for Jesus to define your identity, instead of your wounds? What would that mean for you as a woman who struggles with pornography to have your identity determined by who you are in Christ and not by what you have done? What would it mean for your recovery and your future?

The idea of Jesus defining you may be a scary thought. That is because the way in which we see ourselves has the greatest impact on how we think God sees us. For some of you, there is the belief that you’ve done too much or sinned too greatly to deserve God’s love, and for others, there is the belief that you must look or act a certain way (perfect) in order to be accepted by God.

We’ve just seen how that’s not true. But how do we live that out? In 1 Peter 2:9 we learn four things about identity with Jesus: every one of you is called by God as His CHOSEN — ROYAL — OWNED — DAUGHTER. And with that in mind, we can redefine identity too: “Nothing less than who Jesus says you are.”

Action Step:

Repeat these identity statements:

“I am chosen.” This means that God himself has selected you—he has personally picked you to receive is love (1 Thessalonians 1:4).

“I am royal.” Being royalty means that you are not despised or lowly. Far from it—you are nobility! You are a princess, a queen among the people of God (Romans 8:17).

“I am owned.” This means that you belong to God and no one else. You were bought with a price. No person or thing can lay claim to you because you are a possession of God himself (1 Corinthians 6:20).

“I am a daughter.” You are not part of just any family, but part of the family of God (Galatians 3:27-29).

Reflection:

Now that we have a definition for identity with Jesus, think about the seven identity wounds. Remember which ones resonated most with your identity as a woman who struggles with sexual addiction. Prayerfully reflect on what it would mean to redefine your own identity into who Jesus says you are: chosen, royal, owned, daughter.
