One Day (There Will Be Healing)

DAY 1 OF 5

FIGHT WORRY WITH FOREVER

I struggle with worry. I have for as long as I can remember. When I was a young kid, I would lie in my bed and worry about what sci-fi creatures might be lurking in the darkness of my bedroom. I would worry about whether or not the coyotes I heard howling in the woods outside my rural Indiana home would find a way to “get me” while I slept. As time went on, more worry and anxiety began to creep into my heart and mind. After my aunt passed away when I was eight, I began to worry about the mortality of all the people I loved. I had been taught familiar Bible verses, like 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you,” and Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and supplication, present your requests to God,” and believe me, I made a lot of requests known to God. But worry still always seemed to get the best of me.

Now at age 28, I’d love to tell you that I have this whole worry thing put to rest, but I don’t. However, I have learned how to fight it—and win—more often than not. I fight the lies of worry with the promises of God. You see, the lies of worry and anxiety desire to make us think God is not able to handle our situation, but the truth is that God has said that He will “never leave us nor forsake us,” that He will “supply all of our needs,” that “even the winds and sea obey Him,” and so much more! The Bible is full of God’s promises to His people. And the greatest promise of all, the one that keeps me going every day, is this: for God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jesus comforts his disciples with this same promise in John 16:33. He says, ”I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus is telling them, “Listen, I know things are hard for you right now, but you can have peace right where you are because I have given you the hope of eternity beyond all of this.” That means that no matter what you and I face in this life, no matter what we’re worried about, we can have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding because we know that this is only temporary, and perfect life with Jesus is waiting for us. And it will last forever. “We will sing in the darkest night, ’cause we know that the light will come.”

About this Plan

One Day (There Will Be Healing)

None of us are strangers to the brokenness of this life. We’ve all experienced firsthand the pain of loss, illness, and injustice. As we look around this world, it’s easy to feel hopeless, but thank God we are promised more than this world. We are promised heaven. My prayer is that this study would point you to that hope—healing for all creation.
