[New Life New Way] Made To Work

DAY 4 OF 5

Work Is A Blessing

As Martin Luther said: “Your work is a very sacred matter. God delights in it, and through it He wants to bestow His blessing on you.” When work is done in the Lord and for the Lord, it benefits others and honors God. It is a blessing that brings us fulfillment. God blesses us through other people’s jobs, and He blesses others through our jobs.

Many of us believe that work is a curse because of Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3. But before that, in Genesis 2, God took Adam to the Garden of Eden and gave it to him to work it and watch over it. It was before sin that God asked humankind to work. We must not consider it a curse, but a blessing from God. To be able to work is a gift from God. And to be able to enjoy our work is also a gift from God. Even if we have jobs that we do not like, we should be thankful to God that we have a job!

God meant for us to enjoy working. Work is not meant to be suffered or treated as something that is not good or should not exist. It is good for us to work. It is good for us to be healthy enough that we can have jobs or do work in our homes that brings change and causes an impact. It is God’s will for us to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

The Apostle Paul talks in 1 Thessalonians 4 about working with our hands so that we will be respected and not have to depend on others. These are blessings of work:  respect, independence, and the ability to help others.

There are many promises of God’s blessings over our work in the Bible, because He delights in our work. It is a gift from God for us to like and enjoy the work of our hands.

Thought of the Day: Think about what a blessing it is to work and be able to help people in need. That is part of our ministry as Christians: To love our neighbors, to serve them, and to help them when they are in need.
