We're Still In This: Healthy Truths For Happy Relationshipsಮಾದರಿ
Is Humility Counter-Cultural?
Humility. Now that’s a word you just don’t see or hear much about on any kind of social media or TV programming. There are not many movie scripts full of lines like “love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44) or “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) and certainly not “turn the other cheek” (Matthew 5:39). Sadly, it sometimes seems as if humility is becoming counter-cultural. And in many cases, children are being raised to learn, know, and develop their strengths and push aside their weaknesses. This behavior has grave spiritual repercussions because God literally designed us to lean on Him.
When we try to have healthy relationships using our own strength, we will fail every time. When we try to lead without Him, we will fail every time! Satan knows where we are vulnerable, weak, and defenseless and attacks us in those weakest, most vulnerable areas – it’s his job! Scripture is clear, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT). But fear not, mighty warrior of God, “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4 ESV). God is always for you! Being humble literally takes us out of the equation so God can work! True humility says, “I can’t, but HE CAN.”
Tangible Takeaway:
The end of Psalm 139 reads, “And see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:24 NASB). In the margins of my Bible, I translate this verse as “she me as You see me.”
With a sincere heart before God, ask Him to reveal your heart as He sees it. Be ready because He will!
