How To Be A Christian At Your Work – Part 2 Of 2

DAY 2 OF 6

Yesterday, we introduced the word BLESS as a guide to help us live as a Christian at our work.

We saw that the letter “B” reminded us to “Begin with prayer” and if you didn’t already start today with some prayer, take a few minutes just now to pray and thank God for your work and reflect on it with Him.

Once we’ve started our day with prayer, the next step is captured by the letter “L” which reminds us to “Listen and Look for opportunities” to BLESS someone.

Recognizing the opportunity to BLESS someone is not always immediately obvious – and that’s why we start our day with prayer.

In a way, our prayer before (and during) the work day is like putting on “spiritual glasses” so that we might better see what God has in store for us and those with whom we work.

With our “spiritual glasses” in place, we can more clearly see those “good works” that are already planned for us to do on that day, just as it says in Ephesians 2:10.

Did you get that? Even before you woke up today, God already prepared those “good works” opportunities for you to BLESS others at your workplace.

And, since these opportunities are already pre-arranged by God, your responsibility is to spot them and do them.

Easier said than done, you might say, and rightly so!

But what does it mean to BLESS your co-worker?

Paul’s letter to the Galatians gives some insight:

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (Galatians 6:10, NIV)

Paul also offers additional guidance in his letter to the Colossians:

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. (Colossians 4:5, NIV)

The basic idea is pretty simple – we should do good towards others and be wise in how we act, especially when our fellow employees know that we are Christians and watching to see how we behave.

Following through on these opportunities – prepared for you in advance by God Himself – is the exact place where your faith gets real. This is where our faith moves from theology into practice.

But what is this “good” that we should do? And how do we do it?

Actually, it isn’t possible for us or anyone else to tell you that... but, if you are praying your way through the day, God Himself will tell you, by placing a prompting – an idea – in your mind on how to BLESS someone that day.

If you seek to glorify God through your actions, He can and will make your faith real, and you will know exactly what it is that He wants you to do, and when to do it.

The question that remains is – will you follow through?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I am excited yet sometimes afraid or hesitant to spot the opportunities that you have prepared for me.  Remove my fears, and help me to spot these opportunities to BLESS others.  Thank you for the assurance of your presence throughout my working day.  Amen.

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT

Have you ever spotted an opportunity to BLESS your co-worker, but then did not act?

Do you think that God help you identify the good works that He has already prepared for you to do at your work? Would you like that?

Spend time in prayer this day and the next to ask for God’s blessing in identifying the opportunity to BLESS others at your work.
