One On One: 100 Days With Jesus--PASSION

DAY 9 OF 35

The Road: The One who is the only way

You can tell a lot about a person by the road they choose. Ultimately, that road determines where you end up.

When Jesus said goodbye to His disciples a few hours before He was arrested in the garden, He said, “I’m going away—but you know the way to where I’m going.” They looked at Him like deer in headlights—if we don’t know where You’re going, how can we know the way?

Like on cue, Jesus answers, “Follow Me—I am the way.” Then He puts the whole gospel in a nutshell: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” You want to know how to get to God? I am the way. Literally, I am the road.

Within a few short years all of Jesus’ followers were called, “Followers of the Way.” Jesus is the road you choose. He is the way you follow.

“He is the way” is really an old metaphor made new. In the Old Testament, when the children of Israel wandered the Negev desert out of Egypt, God used a fire at night and a cloud by day “to show the way (or the road) they should go.”

You probably know the promise in Proverbs 3:6, “In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will make your path/road straight.”

The prophet Isaiah pleaded with us to walk the “highway of holiness,” a road reserved for people following God. All Old Testament “roads” were fulfilled when Jesus declared Himself to be “The Road. . . the Truth, and the Life” and asked us to walk with Him.

If you want to follow Jesus, pray like Moses did. He asked God, “let me walk Your road, that I may know You . . .”(Exodus 33:13). If you walk God’s road, you’ll learn God’s ways—and over a lifetime that path decides your destiny.

The road you walk determines the life you’ll live. Choose wisely.
