DAY 4 OF 81

As you read or listen to the Bible this year, I encourage you to Be Curious! When you find something in the Bible that brings up a question, there usually are good answers available. For names and places, you can often find helpful wikipedia articles. For questions regarding the wording of your translation, I suggest you check out the footnotes in the NET. If using the NET in the YouVersion Bible app, make sure that the setting for Show Footnotes is turned on.

GENESIS 7-8:
In Genesis 5, we heard the overview of the descendants of Adam and Eve up to Noah. In chapter 6, Noah was further introduced. Also the reason for the flood was explained.

JOB 4:
In chapter 3 Job cursed the day he was born and expressed his deep misery.

In the speeches of Job’s three friends we will see a mixture of truth and error. In particular, we should not follow Eliphaz’s example in today’s chapter. The Bible tells us repeatedly that we are not to trust or listen to communication from spirits. We will read the second chapter of Eliphaz’ response tomorrow.

MARK 3:
In Mark 2, Jesus shocked his listeners by first forgiving a paralyzed man’s sins before actually healing the man’s body. And in three other events in chapter 2 we can see the beginnings of the conflict between Jesus and the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees.

Let’s pray.
Our Lord Jesus, it is appropriate that you bear the exalted title, the Son of Man. May we learn this year how appropriate that title is for you! You said to the paralyzed man first, “Your sins are forgiven.” Some people think that was the easy thing to say, because no one could see it happen. But Lord, You knew the cost of saying those words. It meant that You would become the sacrifice for this man’s sins. Thank you that your sacrifice was done for us as well. You said to Levi that You came to call sinners and outcasts. Thank You, because that includes us. Your teaching is indeed like new wine. Help us to accept it. Because old wineskins are not flexible enough to hold the new wine of your teachings, which shatter our opinions and old religion— no matter what those are.
