The Power of Leading Your Heart with Truth
I recently heard some great advice: Emotions are like children. It’s okay to let them ride in the car with you, but don’t let them in the driver’s seat.
Oh! What if we always remembered to judge between emotions that, if we follow them, will lead us down a good path and those that could lead us down a destructive path? What if instead of allowing our emotions to lead us we chose to lead our hearts with truth?
Can you imagine how different the world would be?
Couples wouldn’t allow emotional offenses to drive a wedge between them. Spouses wouldn’t be driven by deceitful desires to commit adultery. Neighbors wouldn’t allow hate to cause them to repay evil for evil. People wouldn’t give up on their dreams when they should stay the course. Men wouldn’t run into shopping malls and shoot innocent people. Friends wouldn’t allow anger to rule over them during a disagreement. Oh! How would it be if we always remembered to lead our hearts with truth rather than allow our emotions into the driver’s seat of our lives?
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
(Proverbs 4:23 NLT)
When your emotions are screaming, “Give up!” but you know quitting would be disobeying God, you’ve got to lead your heart with truth.
When your feelings are telling you, “You’re a loser,” you’ve got to lead your heart with truth rather than believe that lie.
When your heart is saying God doesn’t love you, no one will accept you, you’re useless, you’re a failure, that it’s okay to hate, hold a grudge, commit adultery, repay evil for evil, run from God, or abandon hope, you’ve got to lead your heart with God’s truth so you can stay on His good path for your life.
You must lead your heart with truth found in the Word even when your heart doesn’t feel like the truth is true. And the way to lead your heart is to spend time with Christ and learn of Him.
“Then you know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
(John 8:32)
Do you need to submit your emotions to God and allow Him to transform them with His truth?
