Prayers For Purpose

DAY 5 OF 5

When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, You will be happy and it will be well with you. Psalm 128:2

Father, striving for significance through what I do in my work can become a competition with other important and significant values in life. I pray that You will enable me to find balance between work and life itself. Let my satisfaction in the fruit of my hands not drive me to get more but rather teach me to rest in what I have. Happiness and peace can be elusive while pain is all too common when our identity is tied directly to significance. I relinquish my need for significance at the cost of personal and family peace. I do not want to experience pain or cause it in this desire for significance in my work.

Keep me from the pain brought out by making work an idol in itself. Reassure me of my value and significance to You in what I do. My work is to do Your will, whether that be perceived as large or small. Whether that be cleaning the kitchen in my home, preparing a meal for my family or teaching a class or running a business. Let me find peace in the truth of one of your servants who wrote, “There is no work better than to please God; to pour water, to wash dishes, to be a cobbler, or an apostle, all are one. I find peace in the significance of pleasing You. In Christ, amen.
