Keep Believing
Maybe you’ve been believing for something for a long time and haven’t seen an answer. My best advice is: don’t stop now.
Anytime you hear someone say, “I asked God but He didn’t answer,” or, “I tried believing but it didn’t work,” you’re hearing someone who has stopped believing. God’s promise didn’t change; the person did.
That’s what happened to Peter in Matthew 14.
Peter and the other disciples were in a boat when Jesus came walking on the water. The other disciples were freaked out and they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Peter hollered, Lord, if it’s You, command me to come to You on the water.
Jesus said, Come and based on that word from the Lord, Peter got out of the boat and he walked on the water. He really did it! That’s amazing! Obviously, Peter had more faith than anyone else on that boat.
But he hadn’t gone far when he took his eyes off Jesusand began to look at the wind and waves all around him. He stopped holding fast to the word of the Lord (“Come”), and he looked at the circumstances. And he began to sink.
When Peter cried out Lord, save me! Of course Jesus did. But He said, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? Basically, Jesus was saying, “Peter, why did you change? You stopped believing me and started believing the wind and waves.”
I don’t believe Jesus was talking about the size of Peter’s faith -- He was talking about the duration of Peter’s faith. Peter had a short burst of faith. He started strong. He had big faith to get out of that boat. But he was moved by the wind and waves.
That happens to us too. We’ve started out strong in faith, but then something happens and we start believing what we see (or don’t see) and stop believing the Word. If Peter had kept his eyes on Jesus, and ignored the wind and the waves, he would have made it safely to Jesus’ side.
See, wind and waves have nothing to do with walking on water. Think about it. Is water-walking possible? No. Even if water is as smooth as glass, you can’t walk on it—you need supernatural help. But God never changes. We have His supernatural help, as long as we keep believing.
