DAY 1 OF 6

Be a Light

If you’ve been around people who follow Jesus, you might hear them say things like, “Be the light” or “Let your light shine.” You may wonder what that means or if it’s just some silly Christian catchphrase. But, the Bible makes a pretty big deal about light. Jesus tells us that He is the light of the world (John 8:12). He also says His followers are called to become the light of the world, too (Matthew 5:14). In the Psalms, the Bible is even referred to as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).

So, we are called to become light in a sometimes dark world. But, what does that even look like? Over the next few days, we’ll break down what light means, why light matters, and how to become it—in all its various forms. Whether you consider yourself a believer or not, everyone can agree that when a light shines, it always tells us more than we could interpret in darkness. It reveals, clarifies, and provides direction.

For that reason, perhaps we can start to view light as an invitation—an invitation to find courage, move forward, and trust the next step in our journeys.

If you’re looking for ways to grow in your faith, if you desire to step more fully into your identity as a Christ follower, if you want some clear reminders of who you are called to be as it relates to your Creator, your community, and culture—let’s let this metaphor of light become more than a casual phrase and start allowing it to reveal who God has called us to be.

Challenge: As you read the next few Scriptures, ask God to reveal a fresh perspective to you, and consider how important light is.
