DAY 7 OF 14

The Bread of Life and Bagels for Breakfast

Food is so personal. God created our bodies to both need food and enjoy food. Food is both a life-sustaining necessity and a pleasure. But food isn’t just about calories—it teaches us something about the nature of who God is.

God wisely made us bread-dependent creatures so that we would be able to understand what it means to live by the Bread of Life. He knows how easy it is for us to be fixated on our daily bread and completely miss the point of being given daily bread.

The crowds that followed Jesus had cravings. Some of the people merely craved food. They had heard about the miraculous meals he gave the people. Some of the people craved healing from some kind of affliction. Most of the people in the crowds did not know that Jesus could give them so much more than temporary relief from their hunger and illnesses. He is the one who gives eternal life! The radical nature of Christ’s claim to be the Bread of Life comes alongside another radical notion about the nature of the salvation he offers. It has to do with the cost of this life-giving bread: the cost of bread in God’s kingdom is just to be hungry for it.

What about you? Do you want to be fed? How long do you want to be satisfied? Jesus is the Bread of Life who satisfies us with himself forever through the sacrifice of his own body on the cross.

About this Plan

Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in your Home

Sometimes life feels a lot like a burden—day in and day out it’s the same chores and tasks, anxieties and responsibilities. So where is God in all of this? Does he care about the way we unload the dishwasher or balance the budget? Do the little things like changing diapers make a difference? We all need encouragement to see the reality of God’s grace in all of life.
