DAY 4 OF 5

Walking On in Faith

There was no way I could have anticipated the phone call on the day I made the team or the one from Coach Carroll years later inviting me to join the Seahawks organization as his special assistant. Believe me, there are plenty of days when nothing extraordinary happens at the Seahawks headquarters: I coordinate a meeting, plan a public appearance for Coach, entertain a guest at practice, or perform one of a thousand other seemingly menial tasks. But because I never know what God might surprise me with, I aim to approach each day with a hopeful expectation that He has a great purpose for my life.

Thinking back to those times God filled me with a courage I wouldn’t normally possess bolsters my confidence to be brave. Going through the tryouts for the number one football team in the country with essentially no football experience was one of the scariest things I have ever done. But seeing how God worked in my life after I acted upon that nudge gives me courage to step out again and again. It’s still tough for me. In fact, with my introverted personality and fear of failure, it isn’t that much easier for me today than it was the day I timidly introduced myself to Coach Carroll after covering my first practice as a student newspaper reporter. Nowadays, I draw upon that courage every time I have a difficult conversation with Coach, challenging him on a decision or presenting a new and outlandish project idea to him. It’s all with the intent of helping him be in the best position to succeed, but it doesn’t lessen the sting of potential rejection.

Even when you face seemingly insurmountable circumstances, God has plans for you that you would not believe, even if He told you. He took a skinny student newspaper reporter who hadn’t played football since the fifth grade and placed him on the nation’s top-ranked college football team, only to get seriously injured, battle back through rehab, get in for one play, aim to find a God-given purpose, and eventually discover four years later the fulfillment of an amazing calling. Are you prepared to walk on in faith, expecting God to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told?

What situation in your life do you especially need faith and courage for today?

About this Plan

Be Utterly Amazed

As a reporter for my college newspaper, I tried out for the #1 football team in the country for a story. When I found my name on the roster, I was shocked, thinking it was a mistake. I realize now it was part of God’s plan. God has a purpose for you too. I pray this reminds you that as we walk in faith, God is always a step ahead.
