DAY 15 OF 33

Coach Talk

Hal Hiatt

Ready:

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:16

Set:

Kelly’s batting average had dropped 85 points and he had lost concentration at the plate. He was also frustrated that Coach Brown had moved him four places down the lineup to the number 7 position. His concern was becoming panic. It now seemed that coach was losing confidence in him so he asked Coach if he could stop by his office for a chat after practice.

“Coach, I know my hitting has been bad and I just don’t know what to do.” Kelly said. “I guess I need to drop off the team till I can get things back on track.” Coach Brown immediately recognized Kelly’s loss of self-confidence and replied, “Kelly! Son you are one of the best players I’ve ever coached. Everyone has hitting slumps. Your team needs you and so do I. If there is other stuff you need to talk about, you know I’m here for you. I didn’t move you down in the batting order because you were in a slump. We need more strength in the bottom of our hitting order and you’re the man for the job.” The next game Kelly had three hits!

Sometimes our emotions dominate our rationale thoughts. The promise of our Heavenly Father is that He will always be there for us. We need to talk to Him so he can provide all the reassurance we need to make things right.

Go:

  1. Have you ever been afraid to share your thoughts with your coach or another teammate? Why?
  2. How does it help when you can be open and talk to others about problems?
  3. When is the last time you had a “heart to heart” conversation with God?

Overtime:

Heavenly Father, I pour my heart out to You because I know there’s no one who loves me more.

About this Plan

Strong

Athletes are conditioned to be strong both physically and mentally. But as Christian competitors, we have the game-changing advantage of being spiritually strong. With Jesus Christ and His Word transforming us daily, we can be strong 24/7! The FCA Strong Devotional tackles issues that coaches and athletes during competition and in life. This 31-day plan will also help establish a consistent, daily quiet time with God, and includes extra readings and suggested prayer.
