How Do I Deal with My Rebellious Teenಮಾದರಿ
How Do I Handle a Rebellious Teenager?
If we’re talking about a rebellious teenager who is a believer, you appeal to them with the truth of God’s Word, and to their new nature. If they’re truly a believer, they have eternal life and a new nature, and the Spirit of the Lord dwells in them. At the end of the day, they are going to be receptive to truth, so you speak the truth to them in love.
As a parent, you don’t just speak the truth to your children, for you must live the truth before them. We want to get to the root of where the rebellion is being motivated. Rebellion in any of us is not excusable. It is sin. However, there are things that we as parents do, that contribute to our teen’s rebellion. We need to be authentic and honest about those areas of our lives if we want our circumstances to change.
I may be encouraging rebellion if my discipline of my teenager is over the top and harsh. If my discipline toward my teenager is negligent, without clear parameters and clear guidance, rebellion is being encouraged as well. If I am not being consistent with what I’m teaching them, where I’m lecturing one thing and I’m living another, this can also contribute to their rebellion.
I want to examine myself first and make sure that I’m standing in the right place. If I can say with a clear conscience, not that I’m a perfect parent, but I’m a consistent one who’s striving to do what’s pleasing in the sight of God, then I’m just going to appeal to them with the truths of God’s Word. Yes, you need to talk and listen to them to find out what is motivating their rebellious attitude. Nevertheless, if they’re a believer, you appeal to them with Scripture in a loving way.
