Balance At Work

DAY 4 OF 4

Rhythm: Needing One Thing vs. Having It All

Jesus praised Mary’s discernment to make the best choice for that moment. Her priority in that moment was her relationship with Jesus, not what others thought she should do. It’s probably safe to say that Mary would have been more than happy to serve her guests, but she was moved to make sitting at the feet of Jesus more important. She chose the best thing over the good thing.

Many of us operate as if everything at work depends on us. It may be that we think we have to do it all or things will fall apart. Or maybe work has become a way to prove our worth and value. Hard work has value, but it is not more important than our relationship with Christ.

Jesus said only one thing is needed. Mary chose being with Jesus over “doing it all.” For us to live an integrated life and achieve balance, we have to let go of the feeling that it all depends on us. We need depend on Christ instead.

Jesus demonstrated through his own life that everyone needs to take breaks from work to remember their dependence on God. The crowds sought Jesus out for healing and teaching (both good things), but “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that there is a time for everything. Do you make time to connect with Jesus?

Prayer

Jesus, you are Lord of all of my life. Forgive me when I make work an idol. Give me strength to establish a healthy rhythm so that I choose what’s best in each moment. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
