John reminds us once again of how to distinguish teachers we can trust from those who are leading us astray. Anyone can claim, “I love God,” but do they also acknowledge the truth about Jesus that has been passed down to us by the apostles (compiled now in our New Testament), and are they marked by love for others? Those who are truly born of God, who have God’s Spirit living in them, will give evidence of both of these vital commitments. John is repeating himself here, but are we listening? Read through verses 17-21 slowly – what is God saying to you in them that you most need to hear right now?
