The Fifth Plague: Livestock Diseased
1Then the Lord said to Moses, #Ex. 4:23; 8:1“Go in to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may #Ex. 7:16serve Me. 2For if you #Ex. 8:2refuse to let them go, and still hold them, 3behold, the #Ex. 7:4; 1 Sam. 5:6; Ps. 39:10; Acts 13:11hand of the Lord will be on your cattle in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the oxen, and on the sheep—a very severe pestilence. 4And #Ex. 8:22the Lord will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.” ’ ” 5Then the Lord appointed a set time, saying, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land.”
6So the Lord did this thing on the next day, and #Ex. 9:19, 20, 25; Ps. 78:48, 50all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died. 7Then Pharaoh sent, and indeed, not even one of the livestock of the Israelites was dead. But the #Ex. 7:14; 8:32heart of Pharaoh became hard, and he did not let the people go.
The Sixth Plague: Boils
8So the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take for yourselves handfuls of ashes from a furnace, and let Moses scatter it toward the heavens in the sight of Pharaoh. 9And it will become fine dust in all the land of Egypt, and it will cause #Deut. 28:27; Rev. 16:2boils that break out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” 10Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them toward heaven. And they caused #Deut. 28:27boils that break out in sores on man and beast. 11And the #(Ex. 8:18, 19; 2 Tim. 3:9)magicians could not stand before Moses because of the #Deut. 28:27; Job 2:7; Rev. 16:1, 2boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. 12But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he #Ex. 7:13did not heed them, just #Ex. 4:21as the Lord had spoken to Moses.
The Seventh Plague: Hail
13Then the Lord said to Moses, #Ex. 8:20“Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may #Ex. 9:1serve Me, 14for at this time I will send all My plagues to your very heart, and on your servants and on your people, #Ex. 8:10; Deut. 3:24; 2 Sam. 7:22; 1 Chr. 17:20; Ps. 86:8; Is. 45:5–8; 46:9; Jer. 10:6, 7that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth. 15Now if I had #Ex. 3:20; 7:5stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with #Ex. 5:3pestilence, then you would have been cut off from the earth. 16But indeed for #Ex. 14:17; Prov. 16:4; (Rom. 9:17, 18; 1 Pet. 2:8, 9)this purpose I have raised you up, that I may #Ex. 7:4, 5; 10:1; 11:9; 14:17show My power in you, and that My #1 Kin. 8:43name may be declared in all the earth. 17As yet you exalt yourself against My people in that you will not let them go. 18Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause very heavy hail to rain down, such as has not been in Egypt since its founding until now. 19Therefore send now and gather your livestock and all that you have in the field, for the hail shall come down on every man and every animal which is found in the field and is not brought home; and they shall die.” ’ ”
20He who #Ex. 1:17; 14:31; (Prov. 13:13)feared the word of the Lord among the #Ex. 8:19; 10:7servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his livestock flee to the houses. 21But he who did not regard the word of the Lord left his servants and his livestock in the field.
22Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be #Rev. 16:21hail in all the land of Egypt—on man, on beast, and on every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.” 23And Moses stretched out his rod toward heaven; and #Gen. 19:24; Josh. 10:11; Ps. 18:13; 78:47; 105:32; 148:8; Is. 30:30; Ezek. 38:22; Rev. 8:7the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire darted to the ground. And the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25And the #Ex. 9:19; Ps. 78:47, 48; 105:32, 33hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26#Ex. 8:22, 23; 9:4, 6; 10:23; 11:7; 12:13; Is. 32:18, 19Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.
27And Pharaoh sent and #Ex. 8:8called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, #Ex. 9:34; 10:16, 17“I have sinned this time. #2 Chr. 12:6; Ps. 129:4; 145:17; Lam. 1:18The Lord is righteous, and my people and I are wicked. 28#Ex. 8:8, 28; 10:17; Acts 8:24Entreat the Lord, that there may be no more mighty thundering and hail, for it is enough. I will let you #Ex. 8:25; 10:8, 24go, and you shall stay no longer.”
29So Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will #1 Kin. 8:22, 38; Ps. 143:6; Is. 1:15spread out my hands to the Lord; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the #Ex. 8:22; 19:5; 20:11; Ps. 24:1; 1 Cor. 10:26, 28earth is the Lord’s. 30But as for you and your servants, #Ex. 8:29; (Is. 26:10)I know that you will not yet fear the Lord God.”
31Now the flax and the barley were struck, #Ruth 1:22; 2:23for the barley was in the head and the flax was in bud. 32But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are late crops.
33So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and #Ex. 8:12; 9:29spread out his hands to the Lord; then the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain was not poured on the earth. 34And when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet more; and he hardened his heart, he and his servants. 35So #Ex. 4:21the heart of Pharaoh was hard; neither would he let the children of Israel go, as the Lord had spoken by Moses.
