Moses Makes New Tablets
1And the Lord said to Moses, #(Ex. 24:12; 31:18; 32:15, 16, 19; Deut. 4:13)“Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and #Deut. 10:2, 4I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. 2So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there #Ex. 19:11, 18, 20on the top of the mountain. 3And no man shall #Ex. 19:12, 13; 24:9–11come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain.”
4So he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone.
5Now the Lord descended in the #Ex. 19:9cloud and stood with him there, and #Ex. 33:19proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord #Num. 14:18; Deut. 4:31; Neh. 9:17; Joel 2:13God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in #Rom. 2:4goodness and #Ps. 108:4truth, 7#Ex. 20:6keeping mercy for thousands, #Ps. 103:3, 4; Dan. 9:9; Eph. 4:32; 1 John 1:9forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, #Josh. 24:19; Job 10:14; Mic. 6:11; Nah. 1:3by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
8So Moses made haste and #Ex. 4:31bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. 9Then he said, “If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, #Ex. 33:12–16let my Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a #Ex. 33:3stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as #Ps. 33:12; 94:14Your inheritance.”
The Covenant Renewed
10And He said: “Behold, #Ex. 34:27, 28; Deut. 5:2I make a covenant. Before all your people I will #Deut. 4:32; Ps. 77:14do marvels such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord. For it is #Ps. 145:6an awesome thing that I will do with you. 11#Deut. 6:25Observe what I command you this day. Behold, #Ex. 23:20–33; 33:2; Josh. 11:23I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12#Ex. 23:32, 33Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. 13But you shall #Ex. 23:24; Deut. 12:3destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and #Deut. 16:21; Judg. 6:25, 26; 2 Kin. 18:4; 2 Chr. 34:3, 4cut down their wooden images 14(for you shall worship #(Ex. 20:3–5)no other god, for the Lord, whose #(Is. 9:6; 57:15)name is Jealous, is a #(Ex. 20:5; Deut. 4:24)jealous God), 15lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they #Judg. 2:17play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them #Num. 25:1, 2; Deut. 32:37, 38invites you and you #1 Cor. 8:4, 7, 10eat of his sacrifice, 16and you take of #Gen. 28:1; Deut. 7:3; Josh. 23:12, 13; 1 Kin. 11:2; Ezra 9:2; Neh. 13:25his daughters for your sons, and his daughters #Num. 25:1, 2; 1 Kin. 11:4play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods.
17#Ex. 20:4, 23; 32:8; Lev. 19:4; Deut. 5:8“You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.
18“The Feast of #Ex. 12:15, 16Unleavened Bread you shall keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, in the appointed time of the #Ex. 12:2; 13:4month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt.
19#Ex. 13:2; 22:29“All that open the womb are Mine, and every male firstborn among your livestock, whether ox or sheep. 20But #Ex. 13:13the firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb. And if you will not redeem him, then you shall break his neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem.
“And none shall appear before Me #Ex. 22:29; 23:15; Deut. 16:16empty-handed.
21#Ex. 20:9; 23:12; 31:15; 35:2; Lev. 23:3; Deut. 5:13“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.
22“And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end.
23#Ex. 23:14–17“Three times in the year all your men shall appear before the Lord, the Lord God of Israel. 24For I will #(Ex. 33:2); Josh. 11:23; 1 Kin. 4:21; 2 Chr. 36:14–16; Ps. 78:55cast out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither will any man covet your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.
25“You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven, #Ex. 12:10nor shall the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover be left until morning.
26#Ex. 23:19; Deut. 26:2“The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
27Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write #Ex. 17:14; 24:4; Deut. 31:9these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28#Ex. 24:18So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And #Ex. 34:1, 4; Deut. 4:31; 10:2, 4He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
The Shining Face of Moses
29Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the #Ex. 32:15two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. 30So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, #Matt. 17:2; 2 Cor. 3:7the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moses talked with them. 32Afterward all the children of Israel came near, #Ex. 24:3and he gave them as commandments all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put #(2 Cor. 3:13, 14)a veil on his face. 34But #(2 Cor. 3:13–16)whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded. 35And whenever the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone, then Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with Him.
