Witnesses
Acts 1:8
A witness is someone who has personal knowledge, who offers evidence or proof, who publicly affirms by word or action a certain belief or conviction. Because we have personal knowledge of the Lord Jesus, it is our responsibility to publicly affirm He is the Savior of the world. Our transformed lives supply the evidence that He rose from the dead and can raise us from the death-dealing effects of sin.
The Greek word translated “witnesses” in our theme scripture is martus (pronounced mar’-toos), also translated “martyr” in the Bible. So a real witness is someone willing to die (literally) for the cause of Christ or die (spiritually speaking) to the enticements of the flesh. In a world full of false religions and false deities, it is essential that we pursue this calling with passion.
Consider the real reason God gave the baptism of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. Those early disciples were endued with power, not just for their own spiritual advancement, but for the purpose of reaching others. The religious elite claimed they were illiterate, uneducated men, yet these simple followers of Jesus birthed a spiritual awakening in their generation that has since surrounded the globe.
The rushing mighty wind and the consuming fire from heaven has blown and burned its way into every culture. An ancient prophecy given by the Son of God is so close to fulfillment—that the gospel of the kingdom must be declared as a “witness” to all nations, and then the end shall come. How can we slow our pace until this has been fully accomplished, until everyone has heard of the salvation that is found in Jesus alone?
DECLARE WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST
I proclaim that I am a witness of the Lord Jesus Christ! My changed life is sufficient proof that Jesus rose from the dead and that He alone is able to save. I declare, by God’s grace I will have an impact on my sphere of influence. I will be a true witness who delivers souls. I believe that God will bear witness of my efforts, even confirming them by signs, wonders, miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit. As I witness for the King, I believe the King will witness for me, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
