Harmony through Respect

Caveat Emptor, the Latin expression, is a business term that is rooted in the principle that any buyer of a product ought to be aware of the nature and functions of the product bought. By this norm, the seller is freed of the inconveniences of bringing to light any inherent loophole that may be attached to his product. Yet, any businessman worth his salt overrides this management principle for the more relevant one that says ‘Customer is King’, thereby acknowledging the fact that no customer can be taken for granted.

Likewise, discernment in our relationships and personal dealings between colleagues, superiors, those working below us and others involve being open and honest, such that they are never taken for granted. It encompasses a respectful approach and is the foundation for a harmonious and fruitful official and personal life.

However, in reality this may be a challenge given the varied temperament and background of individuals. I learnt early on in my working life that perhaps this challenge can be met through temperance and diplomacy. The executive who was heading the enterprise where I was employed had an abundance of these twin qualities which she successfully used to iron out the differences and cynicism of those she had to deal with.

Discernment in relationships is also at the core of spirituality. Jesus constantly spoke of the link that was between God and man: If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Understanding how we are all interlinked to each other in work and life, enables us to remain open, honest and respectful in our relationships. Eventually, it paves the way for cooperation and progress.

‘Motivate them, train them, care about them and make winners out of them… If we treat our employees correctly, they will treat the customers right. And if the customers are treated right, they come back’, said JW Marriott Jr, the Chairman of Marriott Corporation. Treating customers – and others – like ‘kings’ is not just a smart business concept; it is an important attitude in relationships.

Lord, help me to be respectful to those who are set in authority over me and to be fair and kind to those over whom I have control. Amen

Discernment

The world defines success by things that pass away, but true spiritual discernment will help us see through the varied temperaments and backgrounds of individuals around us and into the eternal souls within. Dorothy Victor tells us how to be discerning in our communication, relationships and in the use of our resources and personal freedom. Discernment is at the core of spirituality.
