Romans 8
8
Life in the Spirit
1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, # 1Co 1:30; 2Co 5:17 who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free # Jn 8:32; 1Co 15:45 from the law of sin and death. # Ro 6:18 3For what the law could not do, # Ac 13:39 in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, # 2Co 5:21 and concerning sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. # Gal 5:16
5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, # 1Co 2:14; Gal 5:19–25 but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6To be carnally minded is death, # Ro 6:21 but to be spiritually minded is life and peace, # Ro 8:13 7for the carnal mind is hostile toward God, # Jas 4:4 for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can it be, 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. # Ro 7:5
9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. # 1Co 3:16; 6:19; Gal 4:6 10And if Christ is in you, # Eph 3:17; Col 1:27 though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, # Ac 2:24 He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that lives in you. # Ro 8:2
12Therefore, brothers, we are debtors not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if through the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. # Gal 6:8
14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, # Gal 5:18 these are the sons of God. # Ro 8:19; Gal 3:26 15For you have not received the spirit of slavery again to fear. But you have received the Spirit of adoption, # 1Co 2:12 by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.” # Mk 14:36 16The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirits # 2Co 1:22; Eph 1:13 that we are the children of God, 17and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, # Gal 3:29; 4:7 if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified with Him.
The Glory That Is to Be
18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us. # Col 3:4; 1Pe 4:13 19The eager expectation of the creation waits for the appearance of the sons of God. # 1Jn 3:2 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but by the will of Him who subjected it, # Ge 3:17–19; 5:29 in hope 21that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the glorious freedom of the children of God. # Ac 3:21; Ro 8:14; 9:8; 2Pe 3:13
22We know that the whole creation groans # Jer 12:4, 11 and travails in pain together until now. 23Not only that, but we also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves while eagerly waiting for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. # Ro 7:24; 8:19 24For we are saved through hope, but hope that is seen is not hope, for why does a man still hope for what he sees? # 1Th 5:8; Heb 11:1 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. # 1Th 1:3
26Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. # Ro 8:22; Eph 6:18 27He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. # Ro 8:34; Rev 2:23
28We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. # Ge 50:20; 2Ti 1:9 29For those whom He foreknew, He predestined # Ro 11:2; Eph 1:11 to be conformed to the image of His Son, # 1Co 15:49 so that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified. # Ro 9:23; 1Co 6:11
The Love of God
31What then shall we say to these things? # Ro 4:1; 6:15 If God is for us, who can be against us? # Ps 118:6 32He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, # Jn 3:16; Ro 4:25 how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? # Isa 50:8–9; Rev 12:10–11 It is God who justifies. 34Who is he who condemns? # Ro 8:1 It is Christ who died, yes, who is risen, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. # Mk 16:19; Heb 7:25 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, # 1Co 4:11 or peril, or sword? 36As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.” # Ps 44:22; 1Co 15:30 # 8:36 Ps 44:22.
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. # 1Co 15:57; Gal 2:20 38For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities nor powers, # Eph 1:21; 1Pe 3:22 neither things present nor things to come, 39neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. # Ro 5:8
