Sex in Marriage: The Basics - Part 2Sample
Sex as Communication
Today, as we look at sex as a way to communicate, we are not going to just focus on words. Even though words are very important, there are many other ways to communicate. As guys, we discovered pretty early in life that we were visual. The beauty of our wife is what first caught our eye. Certainly in sex, a husband is visually stimulated. He can communicate an appreciation and admiration for his wife’s body without saying a word. A husband can affirm that he loves the way his wife looks in a way no one else is able to.
When our wives trust us, they become willing to be vulnerable with us. Think about this. In sex, a woman who is naked is about as vulnerable as a person can be. To truly give herself to you in this way communicates a level of trust too powerful for words.
Every couple will have their own unique ways of communicating in sex. The way we touch each other and the words we say to each other are all important parts of the process. I think God gives us a lot of freedom in the sexual relationship in marriage. The important thing is to stay at the comfort level of the one who is least comfortable. As men, we usually have a more vivid imagination than our wives when it comes to sex so we need to communicate our thoughts and then respect our wife’s response.
I truly believe that the sex for a husband and a wife in a Christian marriage can fall into that definition of “mystery.” It is an experiential communication. An experience that words cannot describe.
Today’s Challenge:
What are some of the ways you communicate as a couple in your sexual relationship?
Going Deeper:
1. Dr. Kim says that, “sex is a very strong form of communication.” What does sex communicate to you?
2. Contrast what the media tells us sex communicates with God’s plan for sexual communication in marriage.
3. If the sexual relationship in marriage is “a great mystery,” what will you to make sure you attain it as a couple?
4. Why is the possibility of “great sex” most attainable in a Christian marriage?
Scripture
