How Does God Help Me to Believe?

One of the saddest statements I ever heard came from a woman who said, “My life is so empty. I wish I could believe.” She had found out that you can’t turn faith on and off like a faucet. You can’t just will it into existence. For every wonderful truth in God’s Word there are arguments to the contrary that can often seem compelling and confusing.

Satan has a rebuttal for every precious truth. Jesus’ miracles? Bah . . . parlor tricks. Showbiz illusions, mass hypnosis, resurrection from the dead? Bah . . . he was never actually dead. Or, they just imagined that he was alive again. Or, his memories are alive, but his followers constructed the myths of bodily resurrection. Truth from the Bible? Bah . . . the early church conspired to conceal all the true secret knowledge; there are many more ancient writings full of secret wisdom.
