Matt Redman - Your Grace Finds Me

DAY 4 OF 12

I Need You Now

“Just as the desert needs the blessing of the rain, Just like the winter waiting for the sun again – I need You now.”

When it comes to our walk with God, dependence is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. Independence, so often admired in this world, does not work well in the spiritual life. We were not created to have no need of God – quite the opposite. We will need him every hour, every day, and every year of our existence. And the sooner we face up to that daunting yet liberating truth, the better.

The writer Tozer once describes the motto of a meek person as this:

“In himself nothing; in God, everything.”

Let us dwell on those few short words for a moment, for in truth there is no healthier way to live.

Dependence is not only a smart way to exist spiritually; it’s an honoring one towards God. For as we pray ‘I need You’, not only do we remember our weakness, but we affirm once again His great strength. Look at the Psalmist - he is never ashamed to admit His need of God:

“Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need…” Psalm 142:6

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, God.” Psalm 42:1

“O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You,
My soul thirst for You, my body longs for You
In a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Psalm 63 1-2.

I don’t know where you’re at right now. Perhaps your need involves a struggling relationship. Or perhaps it’s a work-related stress. Maybe you feel spiritually empty, and identify with these heart cries of the Psalmist. Or there could be a financial need weighing you down in this season. Whatever the case, crying out to Jesus is your very best move today. The weakness of who we are invites the greatness of who He is.

“You are calling;
I will come.
To Your river I will run.
I bow down –
I need You now.”
