DAY 5 OF 40

Day 5: Disappointment

Read

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. –Ephesians 3:20

Connect

Sometimes, in a season of singleness, there’s more waiting than dating.

First, the search for eligible women or men takes time. And then it takes time to get to know each other. Do they live for Christ? Do they share your values? Are you attracted to each other? Do you even really want to date this person, or are you asking them to fill in until someone better comes along? Even if you decide to date, you may find yourself waiting again, this time for a significant other to define the relationship, or to commit, or to propose.

Sometimes, in the end, you don’t get what you want, regardless of how hard you’ve prayed, and no matter how long you’ve waited. Other times, you do get what you want, but it doesn’t turn out as expected—your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t make your relationship a priority, or maybe they are still wounded and reeling from their last relationship. Eventually, once again, you may find that you aren’t happy even though you thought you’d be.

Of course, this is all very disappointing and challenging to navigate. But it’s also an opportunity—to take your trust in God to a whole new level.

Yes, He already knows exactly what you want.

And you already know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Yes, He even uses your disappointment.

Because as much as God knows what you want, He also knows what you need.

And one day, you’ll know what you need, too. The closer you get to Him, the clearer “who you really are and what He wants for you” becomes.

Today, ask Him to show you—and trust that at the right time, He will.

Pray

Thank You, Lord, for being with me, even in the aftermath of disappointment. Nobody can console me better than You do—and nobody knows what I need like You do. Please grant me the grace to trust You with all my disappointments.

Reflect

What has disappointed you most about past relationships? What have you been waiting for that you haven’t received yet—such as a date, commitment, or marriage? Write a prayer that expresses your trust in God and His timing.

About this Plan

Unhooked: Holy in a Hookup World

Take 40 days to look more deeply at the parts of your heart that need to be healed—so you can break the cycle of a broken heart and thrive in your singleness. While intimate relationships are designed to remind you of God’s love for you, living them out in a fallen world often results in wounds. This plan will help you move closer to Christ, in your pursuit of hope and healing.
