More Than Just a Story - the Book of John

DAY 49 OF 56

A Borrowed Tomb.

A religious man named Joseph from the town of Arimathea places Jesus in the tomb he had for himself. It wasn't ever meant to be Jesus' tomb. It was borrowed—rented, in a sense—for a short stay. Jesus didn’t need a permanent resting place because death was never meant to hold Him. He knew He was just passing through.

In John 19:31-42, we see the quiet, solemn moment of Jesus’ burial. The world thought this was the end, but God knew it was only a pause. The tomb was not a final destination but a waiting place before resurrection. This borrowed tomb mirrors our own lives—we are not meant to stay here forever.

Jesus reminds us in John 14:2-3 that He is preparing a place for us, a home far greater than anything this world can offer. Like Jesus, we are just passing through. Our struggles, fears, and even the graves we face are temporary.

The world tells us to build, to claim, to make ourselves comfortable. But Jesus tells us to live as travelers, holding this life loosely because something far greater awaits. If even Jesus didn’t need a permanent grave, why should we cling so tightly to the things of this world?

Let His burial remind you today: this world is not your home. You are only renting space for a short while. Your true home is with Him, where life never ends.

  1. In what areas of your life are you holding on too tightly to things that are only temporary? How might remembering that this world is not your home bring you peace?
  2. Jesus’ burial in a borrowed tomb was a reminder that death was not the end of His story. How does this truth give you hope in the midst of your own struggles and uncertainties?
  3. If Jesus is preparing a place for you in eternity, how should that change the way you live today? What practical steps can you take to live with a greater focus on your eternal home?
