DAY 4 OF 4

Day 4) Mission

What Should I Build My Life Around?

1) Faith

“So now faith…” (1 Cor. 13a ESV).

In his concluding remarks about love, the Apostle Paul simplifies his message and articulates what the Corinthians (and we) should build our lives around. When considering a new relationship, ask yourself: Is faith at the center? Not just any faith, but faith in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Faith is believing in something you cannot see (Heb. 11:1), and if your life and relationships are built on faith in anything or anyone other than Jesus, they will not last. A life built on faith will be outward focused, striving to share the message with as many people as possible!

2) Hope

“...hope…” (1 Cor. 13b ESV).

A relationship without hope has no hope of making it. Hope is a confident expectation of good, regardless of your current circumstances. In the midst of some of the most difficult conditions ever endured, Jesus had hope that He would return to His Father, and that His sacrifice would pave the way for us to have a loving relationship with Him. True, loving relationships can be filled with hope because they are first built on faith in Jesus, who is the author of true, lasting hope. How many people do you know who desperately need hope? It is your job to share it with them.

3) Love

“...love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor. 13:13c ESV).

The greatest, most important thing to build your life on is love. Not the fake, surface-level fuzzy feelings that are often mistaken for love in our modern world, but the sacrificial love demonstrated through Jesus’ finished work on the cross. When you consider the feelings you have for someone, how would you describe them? Is it a desire to meet your own selfish needs, or a desire to selflessly meet theirs? A life built on true love can weather even the toughest storms, and it is the only thing that can truly change our broken world.

Big Idea: A life built on faith in Jesus, hope in His promises and sacrificial love reflects true spiritual maturity and endurance. These three pillars (faith, hope, and love) are the foundation for healthy relationships and a lasting, purpose-driven life.

Let's Think About This:

Question 1) How does your understanding of faith in Jesus shape the decisions you make in relationships?

Question 2) What role does hope play in sustaining your relationships, even in difficult times?

Question 3) How can you distinguish between true love and superficial feelings, and how does sacrificial love impact the way you interact with others?

Day 3

About this Plan

You Complete Me

Are you tired of fake people? The Apostle Paul felt the same way. 1 Corinthians is his response to a series of questions sent to him by the church in Corinth. Rather than immediately answering their inquiries, he first addresses some of the inauthentic (fake) things happening within their community. In chapter 13, he focuses on the topic of love—both in their worship services and in their individual relationships. Prayerfully, as we walk through this brief chapter together, we will develop a deeper understanding of God’s complete and perfect love, which enables us to authentically love one another!
