Cultivating a Hunger for the Word

Generally, it’s important to eat every day to be physically nourished. Similarly, the Bible provides the sustenance we need to be spiritually fed. The Bible is more than just rules and stories, it’s our spiritual food where we learn more about Jesus and find the satisfaction our souls desperately need. The Scriptures not only feed us but shape and guide us to be more aligned with Christ.

In Matthew 4, Jesus is led into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. Every time the Devil tempts Jesus, He responds with Scripture verses, showing the power of the Bible in overcoming temptation and living a Godly life. When Jesus entered into the wilderness, he had already been fasting all food and water for 40 days. The Devil knew Jesus was hungry after having fasted so long so he tried to tempt Jesus to break His fast by turning a rock into bread to eat. In response, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 and highlights how we aren’t supposed to just be physically fed but spiritually fed by the Word of God as well.

If we want to grow spiritually, we must be spiritually nourished. This means doing more than just reading over the words of the Bible, but actively diving into the Scripture through studying, meditation, and applying it to our lives. The Scriptures are meant to fill our hearts and minds, leading us to live in the fullness of the life given to us through the resurrection of Jesus. The more we feed on the Scriptures, the more we will desire Him, and the more we will become like Him.
