Starting Fresh in Dating: Renewing Communication for the New Year

DAY 5 OF 5

Day 5: Encouragement and Growth

Encouragement — it’s such a simple thing, but it can transform any relationship. Think for a moment about how it feels when someone believes in you, supports you, and cheers you on. It’s like fuel for the soul, isn’t it? God designed us to need encouragement, and whether you’re in a committed relationship or just beginning to explore a connection with someone, encouragement can strengthen your bond and inspire growth together.

Encouragement means choosing to see the best in the other person, even when life gets tough, and reminding them of their worth. It’s easy to focus on frustrations or what’s going wrong, but God’s Word shows us a better way. We’re called to build each other up, to speak words that offer hope and strength. Your words hold power. They can either discourage someone further or give them the courage to move forward.

Maybe the person you’re with is feeling overwhelmed at work or doubting their abilities in some area of their life. Instead of brushing it off with, “It’ll be fine,” try speaking life into the situation. Say something like, “I see how hard you’re working, and I admire your dedication. You’re capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for.” Whether you’re deeply invested in each other or just getting to know them, these words can make a lasting impact.

Being someone’s cheerleader is about choosing to stand with them, offering positivity and support when they need it most. It’s a way of showing God’s love through your words and actions. Encouragement might seem simple, but it’s a powerful gift you can give at any stage of your relationship. Never underestimate the difference it can make.

Encouragement also invites shared growth. It’s not just about lifting someone up — it’s about walking alongside them and being intentional about growing together, whether you’re building a committed relationship or just getting to know each other better. It takes effort to speak openly, listen actively, and approach conflicts with grace. Some days, this comes naturally. On other days, it requires more patience and intentionality. But every step forward in communication strengthens the connection you’re building.

One of the most powerful ways to grow together is through prayer. Prayer not only connects you to God but also builds a sense of unity between the two of you. Take time to pray for wisdom and for the right words to encourage each other. Ask for patience as you face challenges and for courage to keep growing in the relationship. When you make God a central part of your communication, He will guide your steps and bless your efforts to grow closer.

We invite you to join us on Upward if you are a Christian single looking for a meaningful relationship.
