Examining the Holy Trinity

Jane and John sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G, first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a baby carriage. I’m reminded of these words in a popular jump rope song sung for ages. There’s another well-known jump rope song titled, “Down in the Valley”, where each jump represents the number of kisses a lover would supposedly give to another. Both songs along with many others, sung by naive, innocent youth talk about marriage and love. Yet not one of them (and for obvious reasons), seems to accurately capture the essence of marriage.

Shotgun weddings and divorce as the sole remedy for marital dissatisfaction have become commonplace in our day and age. When couples who have marriages that are deemed successful or long-lasting are asked how they have managed to keep their union going, they may respond, “hard work” or “love”. Others however may say, "God." A simple answer but what exactly does that mean? Perhaps one way to answer this question can be found by examining the implications of the Holy Trinity for marriage. Over the next six days, we will explore the ways that the relationship found within the Godhead offers a framework for understanding and fortifying the marriage covenant. As you read each daily devotion ask God to open your ears, eyes, heart, and mind to his presence.

Lord, open my eyes, ears, heart, and mind to your Holy Word. Help me to acknowledge your presence and recognize when you are speaking, Amen.
