Walk This Way

DAY 18 OF 30

Accept the Invitation

John’s use of light and darkness throughout his Gospel reflects the state of the hearts of the people of Israel. Jesus proclaimed Himself as the Light of the world, yet the Pharisees rejected His declaration. Jesus healed the blind, but the Pharisees chose not to see. Although the Jews had shouted “Hosanna,” they failed to hail Jesus as the Messiah. They focused on the immediate king they wanted, not the future King they needed.

Jesus knew His time on earth was coming to an end, and He attempted, over and over again, to convey the truth of who He is to the people set apart for Him and by Him. Even in their deliberate refusal to receive the life offered to them, Jesus did not come to them with judgment but with another invitation.

Jesus’ desire for the Jews and this world is for all to walk in the light with Him. He is the Light. If they and we would choose to believe in Him, then the darkness – this world – would not overtake them. However, their expectations did not align with the way the Messiah chose to enter this world. Their false hopes for freedom kept them from surrendering, ultimately keeping them in bondage. But Jesus continued to extend the invitation.

Every day, even believers face doubt, fear, control, and uncertainty. These are words that occupy the mind when the words of this world begin to eclipse the Word of God. This is not a matter of salvation because our salvation is sealed by the Holy Spirit. However, the growth of a believer is dependent on our walk with the Lord – our walking in the Light. This is a daily activity, seeking the Savior’s face through prayer, reading His Word, and pondering throughout our day who He is and what He has done for His people. The invitation is always extended, as a loving Father waits for His child. The question is, will we walk in and with the Light today?

Reflect & Pray

God, give us the insight needed to walk in the Light today. Lead us back to You every day for Your wisdom and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan

Walk This Way

Throughout time, and especially in the Bible, the word “walk” has been used as a metaphor to describe the course, cadence, and overall spiritual direction of our lives. From the Garden of Eden to the present day, part of God’s redemptive call and work is teaching His children to “walk this way,” giving direction, counsel, and guidance to our steps. One thing is clear: He cares how we live our lives and desires that we journey through this life in a way that counts.
