Walk This Way

DAY 11 OF 30

The Lord's Sovereignty Prevails

While we are the only creatures to whom God gave free will, it is not absolute. God’s sovereign plans will always supersede our will. Proverbs 16:9 highlights the balance between human free will and God’s sovereignty.

The theme of the first fifteen verses of Proverbs 16 is God’s sovereignty. Look up the word “sovereign” in the dictionary. You will find words and phrases like “superior,” “greatest,” “supreme in power and authority,” “ruler,” and “independent of all others” in its definition. One way to explain God’s sovereignty is to say, “God is in control.” Nothing that happens in the universe is outside of God’s influence and authority. As King of kings and Lord of lords, God has no limitations. Our Creator knew us before we were born (Psalm 139:13; Jeremiah 1:5). He loves us and, as His highest creation, only desires the very best for us (Jeremiah 29:1).

The term “heart” in the Bible refers to the “inner person,” the seat of all physical and spiritual life – the center of thoughts, passions, appetites, purpose, and endeavors. While we make plans and set goals, God ultimately directs our paths and guides the outcome according to His will.

So, how do we align our plans with God’s will? By reading and obeying His Word, by praying and asking Him to direct our path. How are believers to plan for the future? By gathering all the facts, seeking wise counsel from other believers, submitting our plans to Him, and waiting patiently for His guidance and direction.

Proverbs 16:9 emphasizes the importance of divine direction for every believer. While it is wise for believers to plan ahead, we should hold on to these plans loosely. We should trust God’s guidance and allow Him to direct our steps (Psalm 37:23).

God’s sovereignty should comfort the believer in Christ. God is in control. His plan leads us on a good path - one we should all rejoice in. When we seek to walk with Christ, we can align our plans with God’s will for our lives.

Reflect & Pray

Heavenly Father, I praise You for Your love and guidance. Thank you for working all things for good for those who love You. Help me align my earthly desires with Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan

Walk This Way

Throughout time, and especially in the Bible, the word “walk” has been used as a metaphor to describe the course, cadence, and overall spiritual direction of our lives. From the Garden of Eden to the present day, part of God’s redemptive call and work is teaching His children to “walk this way,” giving direction, counsel, and guidance to our steps. One thing is clear: He cares how we live our lives and desires that we journey through this life in a way that counts.
