Be ThankfulSample
A New Life, A New Gratitude
Gratitude is more than a feeling; it’s a defining mark of a life transformed by Christ. In Colossians 3, the call to “be thankful” isn’t a suggestion, but a command rooted in our new identity as believers. This command isn’t directed toward the old life we left behind; it’s for the life we now live through the salvation given by Christ. And it’s not just for individuals; it’s for the entire church, the collective body of believers. We are to be an appreciative community, walking together in gratitude, each of us contributing to a culture of thankfulness.
This kind of gratitude is not natural, but supernatural. It’s a response to what God has done for us in Christ. If you claim to know Jesus but find no love for His people or no desire to be part of the church, then it’s time for reflection. True love for Jesus naturally extends to love for His body, the church. When someone professes thankfulness but shows no care for the people of God, their gratitude may lack the depth that salvation brings. Christ transforms us into thankful people, but we must choose to cultivate this attitude.
Maybe you have eternal life, but your heart has felt far from thankful lately. If so, consider this: gratitude flows from the pursuit of Christ. When we neglect to seek Him daily, or fail to put off old patterns and put on new ones, our hearts grow dull to the goodness around us. If your mind isn’t fixed on Christ, it’s no surprise if gratitude feels distant. Our thanksgiving flourishes when we pursue obedience, immerse ourselves in Scripture, and stay focused on our Savior.
Take a moment to examine yourself. If gratitude seems elusive, ask two questions: Do I truly have new life in Jesus? A heart consistently marked by ingratitude could be missing that transformation. But don’t stop there. If you know Christ, ask yourself if you’re actively pursuing Him. Are you aligning your thoughts with God’s Word, addressing sin, and embracing the new identity He’s given you? True gratitude is cultivated through these daily choices. As we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, seek the Spirit’s guidance, and focus on Christ, a thankful heart begins to take shape.
God's command to be thankful is an invitation to a life rich with joy and purpose. Consider where your focus lies and what choices you need to make to nurture a heart of gratitude. Let these choices transform your attitude, and watch as thankfulness grows naturally.
