Prepare the Way: A 21-Day Reading Plan Through John by Justeina BrownleeSample
Day 12: She Did What She Could
Read John 12
In John 12, we see Mary of Bethany perform a profound act of worship when she anoints Jesus with expensive perfume. This story is also told in Mark’s Gospel, where Jesus says, “She did what she could” (Mark 14:8). Mary, having experienced Jesus' Power firsthand when He raised her brother Lazarus, wanted to show her deep gratitude and love.
Mary’s offering of perfume, worth a year’s wages, was her most valuable possession. Some onlookers, especially Judas, criticized her, seeing it as wasteful. But Jesus defended her, explaining that she had done a “beautiful thing” in preparing His Body for burial. What made her act so significant was not the cost of the perfume, but the sincerity of her heart. She gave everything she had to honor Jesus.
Mary’s act teaches us that Jesus values devotion more than the size of the gift. While others calculated the cost, she poured out her love. She didn’t hold back, even in the face of criticism. This story reminds us to do what we can with what we have, trusting that Jesus sees and values our sincere offerings.
Reflection Questions:
- What does “doing what you can” for Jesus look like in your life? Are there areas where you can give more of yourself to honor Him?
- Have you ever felt criticized for your devotion to Jesus? How can Mary’s story encourage you to keep serving with a sincere heart?
