Authority in Pastors, Teachers, and Elders

Yesterday, we discussed the importance of submitting to governing authorities. Today, we will discuss the importance of submitting to church authority. Before discussing our authority, we must consider how to respond to the types of authority above us. The Church has various levels of authority: pastors, teachers, elders, deacons, etc. Even within most pastoral staff, there is a hierarchy. The author of Hebrews encourages us to obey and submit to our leaders (Hebrews 13:17). My favorite part of the verse is where he says, “So that they may do this with joy, not groaning.” I don’t know about you, but I hope my pastors and leaders do not groan when they think of me!

Paul also reminds us that the elders (who lead well and work hard) are to receive double honor. This may be referring to the reward they will receive in Heaven. It also refers to how we must treat them with respect and reverence. The longer you attend a church, the more likely you will experience a situation in which you may not agree with your pastor or elder. It’s okay to disagree respectfully; I know they are comfortable with your honesty. However, pray about your concerns first. Pray for your leadership. Their role is not easy and should not be taken lightly.

As we discussed yesterday, humans are imperfect. Unfortunately, therefore, not every leader, teacher, elder, deacon, or even pastor will lead in a godly manner. The Word does not insist that we follow everything a person says, like robots. We have to study the Word of God for ourselves to rely on our relationship with Him as we honor those in spiritual authority.
